The Signal Moves West
The Signal Moves West began as a road trip, but somewhere between Chicago and San Diego it became something more: a kind of song journaling.
As I drove across the country, I wrote from inside the experience itself: the emotions of leaving one life behind, the landscapes changing outside the windshield, the people and places I encountered, and the feeling of moving toward a completely new chapter. Each part of the country carried its own mood, and those moments became the emotional backbone of the songs.
The journey also happened during America’s 250th anniversary year, which gave the trip another layer of meaning. Moving through so many different parts of the country while reflecting on its history, its scale, and my own place within it made the experience feel unusually alive.
I started thinking of the process as song journaling: not writing songs later about what the trip had meant, but turning the feelings, observations, and moments of the journey into music while I was still living them. The result is an album that feels less like a collection of tracks and more like a musical record of becoming.
